Sanctuary
The homeowners approached MWDB in search of a living experience shaped by quality of light, peaceful and inspired spaces, connection to the outdoors and longevity at home. In their retirement, it was essential that the home be of intimate scale and comfort for the majority of time spent as a couple, while balancing the ability to generously host and entertain family and friends. The home is designed as two primary gables, the private side and public side, connected by the entry hinge. This massing creates an introspective courtyard. The hinge orchestrates the circulation between sides while also screening visitor arrival access to the intimate spaces. The interior palette conveys warmth in its use of wood and soft color, serving as a backdrop for their collection of travel photography.

From the moment we first talked with them about our dream of building a new home, we were impressed with their willingness to listen to our ideas and to put our needs and wants into the design. We couldn’t be happier with the expertise and professionalism they demonstrated. We experienced genuine caring toward us as individuals and not just business clients.
