About

MWDB is the husband-and-wife team of Tom and Janna Hagensick. Having lived and worked in Chicago and Seattle for many years, they established Urbana as their home base in 2021 with the intention of contributing back to the community where they first met in architecture school. Inspired by the legacy of local, modern residential architecture, they believe that quality design and construction is essential to our well-being and should be accessible to everyone.

Janna Hagensick, NCARB

Architect & Construction Project Manager

As an architect, Janna is passionate about how we experience life every day in our built environment. The organization, sequencing and emotions of space consume her thoughts. She is highly sensitive to the needs expressed by her clients and is fueled by the pursuit of realizing design solutions with simplicity and elegance. Her penchant for precision and organization make her an effective construction project manager.

Janna has two architecture degrees from the University of Illinois. Her Masters in Architecture focused on historic preservation. She worked for talented firms in both historic preservation and residential architecture before pursuing work on her own and in collaboration with Tom.

Tom Hagensick, NCARB

Architect & Construction Site Superintendent

Tom is passionate about people. As an architect, he is tuned into the energy of his clients. He believes in the importance of a collaborative and positive jobsite and that our projects are only as good as our relationships.

He is our Swiss army knife. His long career started in carpentry and drafting before pursuing architectural studies. Fueled by a background in building performance and construction technologies, his breadth of knowledge in the building profession gives him a rare and invaluable skill set. His inquisitive being is constantly noticing beauty and detail.

Tom has an undergraduate architecture degree from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. His Masters in Architecture from the University of Illinois focused on historic preservation. As a professional, he has worked in architecture and construction management. Leading to MWDB, his project portfolio ranges from high-profile historic preservation to specialized single and multi-family residences.
